Road freight rates in Brazil moved higher in June, reaching approximately R$ 8.67 per kilometer traveled. The increase adds to the logistical cost burden faced by grain and livestock producers who rely heavily on trucking to move their output to ports and processing facilities.

Road freight costs rise in June, adding pressure to Brazilian agribusiness margins

Brazilian road freight rates posted a nearly 1% increase in June compared to the previous month, pushing the average cost per kilometer above the R$ 8.60 mark. For rural producers, who depend on trucking as the primary mode of cargo transport, the rise translates directly into tighter operating margins at a critical moment in the crop marketing calendar.

The pressure is especially relevant for soy and corn growers, whose harvests generate intense demand for trucks within compressed timeframes. With vehicle availability stretched and carrier operating costs still elevated due to diesel prices and maintenance expenses, freight rates are expected to remain high throughout the second half of the year.

Industry analysts advise producers to lock in freight contracts in advance whenever feasible and to explore multimodal alternatives such as rail and waterway transport on routes where those options exist. Integrated logistics planning is increasingly seen as a key tool for protecting profitability in an environment of rising transportation costs.
