Grain freight rates in Mato Grosso do Sul fall on more than half of monitored routes in August

Sapiens Agro • October 2, 2026

Brazil's national supply agency Conab recorded freight rate declines on nine of seventeen grain transport routes tracked in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul during August. The data points to a partial easing of logistics costs for producers relying on road haulage to move their output to market. However, the remaining routes showed stable or rising rates, reflecting an uneven picture across the state.

August brought some relief to grain transportation costs in Mato Grosso do Sul, according to the latest periodic survey by the Companhia Nacional de Abastecimento. Out of seventeen routes under observation, nine recorded lower freight charges, suggesting a moderation in haulage expenses across a significant portion of the state's producing regions.

For farmers, freight tariffs have a direct bearing on net farm-gate returns, since transportation costs to processing facilities, storage units, or export terminals are effectively deducted from the price received at the farm. Routes where rates declined in principle improve the competitiveness of grain commercialization during the period.

The eight routes that did not follow the downward trend underscore the importance of monitoring freight prices corridor by corridor before signing haulage agreements. Regional differences in truck availability, road conditions, and distance to ports or inland terminals help explain the disparity in price movements observed across the state.

Conab's systematic freight tracking serves as a benchmark for negotiations between producers and carriers, bringing greater transparency to a sector that is critical during high-volume harvest seasons. As large crops continue to pressure logistics infrastructure, keeping close tabs on freight indicators becomes an essential decision-making tool for agribusiness operators.
