Grain freight rates drop on more than half of monitored routes in Mato Grosso do Sul

Sapiens Agro • October 4, 2026

A Conab survey for August shows that road freight rates for grains fell on nine of the seventeen routes tracked in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The movement reflects a tariff adjustment following the peak harvest shipping season, potentially offering an opportunity for producers who still hold grain stocks.

Grain freight rates drop on more than half of monitored routes in Mato Grosso do Sul

August brought some relief to logistics costs for grain producers in Mato Grosso do Sul. Data released by Brazil's National Supply Company show that nine out of seventeen monitored routes in the state recorded lower road transport tariffs, pointing to a partial easing in the regional supply chain.

The freight decline on specific corridors is likely linked to a reduction in cargo volumes after the most intense period of harvest and early shipment, when demand for trucking capacity tends to run highest. As traffic normalizes, carriers typically adjust rates downward to keep their fleets occupied.

For producers, this environment offers a window to reassess commercialization strategies for grain still in storage, since lower freight costs improve product competitiveness relative to port destinations or end buyers. Comparing available routes and locking in transport contracts while tariff pressure is relatively subdued may prove advantageous.

The remaining eight monitored routes did not post declines, indicating that the reduction is not statewide. Producers based in those areas should track weekly tariff updates and factor logistics costs as a key variable when deciding the optimal timing for selling their output.
