Road freight rates for grain haulage held at elevated levels throughout June, driven by strong demand from ongoing crop flow and a constrained supply of available truckers in several key producing regions. Even so, the rate of increase moderated over the course of the month, suggesting the sharpest phase of upward pressure may be easing.

For the farmer, the situation still represents a significant drag on profitability. Higher freight costs narrow the spread between the commodity price received and the total cost of delivering grain to port or processor, making logistics planning as strategically important as the timing of sales decisions.

The slowdown in June may partly reflect a gradual normalization of truck availability following the most intense weeks of harvest, as well as some softening in demand from exporters adjusting their shipping schedules.
